Gata is one of the most popular and traditional Armenian sweets. There are numerous recipes of gata, and each region has its traditional and most-loved variant. Gata can be in found in a variety of shapes, sizes and can be decorated in different ways. Gata is so popular in Armenia, that housewives bake and serve it during holidays. Moreover, during traditional weddings, the bride presents beautifully wrapped Gata to the women who help her to get dressed. ata can have different fillings but it is usually filled with khoriz, which is made of only 3 ingredients: sugar, flour, and butter, but is really very delicious. Sometimes Armenians put a coin inside, and it is said that whoever gets the coin will be lucky throughout the year.

Armenians love it so much that they even made the longest Gata in the world, which even won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. It weighed 368 kg 800g and it was 60 meter-long. It’s hard to believe, right? But it’s true, we love this pastry that much.

Gata Armenian PastryIngredients (The recipe is taken from “FoodnChef.com”)

6 g salt

300 g sugar

550 g flour

1 egg

450 g sour cream

300 g butter

5 g baking soda

2 g vanillin

Instructions

Mix 200 g butter with 100 g sugar, sour cream (mixed with baking soda), 450 g flour. Add the mixture to the butter and sugar.

Knead the soft dough.

For filling:

  1. Mix 200 g sugar, 100 g flour, and 200 g butter.
  2. Divide the dough into 3 balls, open each ball, add the filling, close the dough, turn it over and straighten into circles.
  3. Bake in the oven at the temperature of 200 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown.
