May has special importance for Armenians; it is called “the month of Victories”. Every year Armenians celebrate a number of holidays during this month. May 9 is a triple holiday for Armenians, as every year Armenians celebrate the victory of the Great Patriotic War, the Liberation of Shushi and the anniversary of Artsakh Defense Army.
The contribution of Armenians in the victory of the Great Patriotic War is undeniable. More than 600 thousand Armenians participated in the War, of which 104 were awarded with the title of the Hero of the USSR, and Nelson Stepanyan was twice awarded with the military title of the Hero of the Soviet Union. Armenia has officially recognized 9 May since its independence in 1991.

Artsakh Defense Army was also founded on May 9, 1992. Every year people in Armenia and Artsakh celebrate its anniversary by organizing a number of cultural and entertainment events.
On May 28 Armenians celebrate the Republic Day, which is a national holiday dedicated to the proclamation of the First Armenian Republic, which followed the victory over Ottoman Forces in Sardarapat Battle. (May 21-29, 1918) The Armenian National Council Declared its sovereignty on 28 May 1918 and Armenia was proclaimed an independent republic on May 28, 1918.
