Levon Shant’s “Princess of the Fallen Fortress” returned to the stage of the Gyumri Drama Theater after a 30-year break.
In a play written about a century ago, Prince Vasil, known for his greed and cruelty, kills Princess Anna’s husband and two little boys while capturing one of the fortresses of Cilicia. The captured princess vows to take revenge and kill her two sons by the hand of her father, Prince Vasil. Gyumri theater emphasizes that the play is now on stage with a new meaning, with new emphasis and solutions.
Ludvig Harutyunyan, director of the play, says that although Levon Shant’s work is about revenge, he tried to present revenge from a different perspective.
The red t-shirts of the 2 murdered children of Princess Anna remind of the revenge that the mother destroyed and made a new one, this time for the 2 sons of Prince Vasil.
Red spool, red thread, black clothes and in general, the whole performance was a battle of red and black colors. The director says that he tried to say what he wanted to say with the missing symbols in Shanti’s work.
Entrusting the character of Princess Anna to 29-year-old Gemma Adamyan scared the actress a little, but also obliged her. “I learn life lessons from every character I play, Princess Anna’s life lesson was revenge,” he says.
A large creative team worked on the performance. The director himself admits that he has not seen the play. They have made peace 3 times already, all three times in a full hall.
