The National Rehabilitation Commission of Ukraine has officially acquitted the famous film director Sergey Parajanov, who was found guilty of “homosexuality” by the USSR court 50 years ago and sentenced to five years in prison.

The report states that after a thorough analysis of the director’s criminal case and archival documents, they concluded that there was a political motive behind Parajanov’s prosecution and conviction.

In 1974, Parajanov was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment in a strict regime camp on charges of “rape” and “pornography”. During the trial, he did not deny having a non-traditional sexual orientation, but he categorically denied the accusations of rape.

Criminal prosecutions were initiated against Parajanov, particularly after his attempts to support Ukrainian writers accused of anti-Soviet propaganda.
